The Significance Of Buddhist Funeral Rites

Buddhism is one of the most widespread religions practised across the world. The main principles of the religion have been derived from the teachings of Lord Buddha. Buddhism involves quest for the Ultimate Truth as well as a sense of compassion and genuine love for every living being.

These basic tenets of Buddhism can be seen in the rituals practised in a Buddhist Funeral. When death occurs in a Buddhist family, there are some main rites which are practised with the objective of ensuring that the soul of the departed can soar to an elevated stage. Prayers are chanted calling upon the positive energies of the dead person for his or her deliverance from this life cycle.

A traditional bath to the deceased marks the beginning of the Buddhist funeral rites. Monks are invited to read out from religious scriptures, and these chants are believed to give the deceased the right guidance to attain spiritual liberation. The monks recite those sermons of Lord Buddha that talk about the significance of practising compassion and kindness. The body is meanwhile prepared for the final rites. The relatives normally place some money in the casket along with the deceased. This is for enabling the deceased to pay and wade across the River of Three Hells.

Then the casket is displayed to the family and friends to enable them to pay their final respects by putting it at the altar. Visitors are required to pray for the deceased and the family and relatives offer their condolences. The priests carrying out the rites keep reciting the sutras as the proceedings move on. After the completion of recitals, people attending the ceremony bow at the altar. The family members then thank the attendees for shouldering their sorrow by distributing gifts to them.

The family members can decide upon whether to cremate the body or bury it according to their familial customs, once all these important rituals are completed. These rites are meant to enable the family to alleviate their grief by offering prayers that will elevate the dead to a higher stage of enlightenment and knowledge.
