Section 8 Offers Massive Multiplayer On Xbox 360

Entering the first person shooter game market at a time of year when there are new episodes of both Halo and Call of Duty coming out might seem suicidal, but Section 8 has enough belief in itself to take the big boys of gaming on. Simple and yet subtle at the same time, it should find itself a home in the consoles of and PCs of many a dedicated gamer.

The first thing to note is the size of the multiplayer - Section 8 has clearly recognised the importance of online play to the success of a first person shooter these days. PC gamers can play up to 42 players at once, and 32 on the Xbox 360 with the use of the X-Server technology that Section 8 implements for the first time on the console.

The game is simple - one team against another, nothing more and nothing less, but Section 8 does offer some new ideas, such as the doing away with spawning. This avoids camping, and it does it by offering you an overview of the field before you drop, so you can choose where to come down, in full knowledge of the advantages (being close to the enemy) and the disadvantages (getting shot down).

Section 8 ensures players can’t do all the normal stuff that annoys us so much, like pogoing and running away. Gameplay features like Overdrive, the super speed ability, have cooldowns built in so you need to be careful when you use them. It does however include one thing everyone will love - guns, really big ones.

Powered by the Unreal Engine 3, the graphics in Section 8 are solid and decent. The beta showed that there were plenty of people who enjoyed the online frantic action, and if it can maintain that level, then the game will remain a success.

With so much focus on the multi-player, you need to remember there’s a full single player game to enjoy as well. You play as part of the 8th Armoured Infantry, nicknamed Section 8. That’s a term from the military for soldiers who have been discharged for being mentally unfit.

Release date for Section 8 is 11th September 2009, and it’s available for Xbox 360 and PC.

Dave Taylor is Publishing Director for GamerZines, the free to download digital games magazine portal. They have produced a free Section 8 magazine for free download, and they also produce the monthly free Xbox 360 magazine, 360Zine.
