Sacred Buddhist Funeral Customs And Their Significances

The core of Buddhist religion, practiced in many countries the world over, comes from the basic teachings of the Buddha. This religion requires mercy and love for man and realization of the Ultimate Truth.

These teachings of Buddhism can be seen in the rites practiced in a Buddhist funeral. Certain mandatory rites should be observed once a person in a Buddhist family dies, to make sure that the dead’s soul gets elevated to a higher level in their next life. Prayers are used to invoke the positive energies of the deceased, ensuring his or her deliverance from this life and wishing them the best for the next.

The first stage in funeral rituals is that of giving the body a traditional bath. Monks are asked to chant different religious scriptures, and these chants are believed to give the soul the correct guidance to attain spiritual freedom. The monks recite those teachings of Lord Buddha that speak of the significance of practising compassion and kindness. Meanwhile, the body is made ready for the final rites. The deceased is generally offered with some coins placed in his casket by the family. This is for enabling the dead person to pay and wade across the River of Three Hells.

Then the friends and family come and pay their last respects to the dead person as the casket is put at the altar. The relatives and friends give condolences to the dead person’s family, while the visitors pray for his soul. Monks who carry out the rituals continue to recite the appropriate sutras. Once the chanting is complete, people bow before the altar to pay their final regards. After the ceremony, the family members of the departed give out gifts to the attendees for sharing their sorrow.

Once these rituals are done, the body may then be either buried or cremated in line with the beliefs of the family. In all, the rites try to bring a sense of acceptance and peace to the people left behind while praying to promote the departed to a higher state of knowledge and realization.
