Is Conductive Hearing Loss A Disability For Social Security Benefits?

Hearing loss can cause complications and frustration in the workplace. A common difficulty that people with hearing loss have is holding conversations with coworkers. Often, working requires additional energy since it can be a struggle to communicate effectively with coworkers.

The person with hearing loss can feel socially isolated if coworkers avoid communication since it is more difficult. Coworkers can be frustrated by having to repeat themselves. People with hearing loss may feel a lack of cooperation with their coworkers, but this is not always the case.

Often, the person tries to keep their hearing loss a secret from their coworkers and employer. Unfortunately, this can exasperate the problem. Without awareness of the hearing loss, coworkers can feel ignored or that the person with hearing loss is disinterested.

People with hearing loss who struggle with employment may wonder is conductive hearing loss a disability? Since conductive hearing loss is usually considered a temporary condition or one that it can be improved with hearing aids, it is not often considered a disability.

The standard for a hearing loss disability set by the Social Security Administration is an impairment of ninety decibels for air convection. For the sake of determining if the impairment is a disability, the hearing impairment measurement of the better ear is compared to the Social Security Administration’s standard.

Many people with hearing loss are productive employees. Employers are encouraged to make accommodations that will make it easier for the employee with a hearing loss. In many cases, an employee with hearing loss who feels that their needs are understood will have a better attitude towards their employment which often increases the person’s productivity.

Conductive hearing loss is often not considered a disability because they hearing loss is usually temporary or can improved with the use of hearing aids. The Social Security Administration of the United States may give the person with conductive hearing loss disability payments if they hearing loss fits their standards for severity and is expected to last for at least one year.

In addition to difficulty with employment, hearing loss can strain relationships. If one spouse has a hearing loss, the other spouse may become frustrated or even depressed about not being heard or feeling heard. The spouse without the hearing loss may feel ignored.
